Program
What’ll Happen to The Wattle??!
The “What’ll Happen to The Wattle??!” (WHTW) program is designed for everyone to take part in.
Supported by the Australian Space Agency and in collaboration with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), One Giant Leap Australia sent golden wattle seeds to the International Space Station. The seeds were in space for 7 months (December 2020 to July 2021) and then distributed to more than 300 locations around our nation. A first for Australia.
Each location around Australia received wattle seeds that flew in space as well as seeds that hadn’t to compare. All the seeds are from the same seed lot. When the seeds are germinated and grown, the data is uploaded to the WHTW’ app.
All groups involved actively experiment with the seeds, and are given the opportunity to take part in webinars, teleconferences, gatherings and virtual meetings. Participants have exclusive access to media and virtual webinars with astronauts, space experts, flight directors and other space professionals for the duration of the program.
The WHTW guidebook has been developed by leading science teachers in Australia and it includes all the Australian Science Curriculum outcomes that are used in the program.
How to Apply
Complete the official application form and submit the video, agreeing to the terms and conditions.
Once selected
Teleconferences and other education support materials are provided for the duration of the program. A small greenhouse, growing medium and all material is provided to participants. The cost of this kit will be $200 (ex GST).
It is envisaged that through wattle planted, a map be made of all the ‘space wattle trees’ around Australia can be visualised and the data will be recorded for future researchers.
This is a first for Australia. Be part of history!
